Read the rule, then write the verbs in the right form (the base verb is given).Lis la règle, puis écris les verbes à la bonne forme (le verbe de base est donné).

Two kinds of « if » in the scene
1. Something possible (it can really happen): if + present, then will or an order.
I will call you if I hear anything. · If you ever want a consult, just give me a call.
2. Something imaginary (it is not true, or not likely): if + preterite, then would + verb.
You wouldn't believe me if I told you. (Jack doesn't tell him… not yet!)
With be, we often say were for everybody: If I were Jack, I would be furious.
Careful: never will or would after if: if I will hear → if I hear · if I would tell → if I told.
I will call you if I (hear) anything.
If you ever (want) a consult, just give me a call.
You (not believe) me if I told you.
If I (tell) you, you wouldn't believe me.
If the airline (find) the coffin, they will call Jack.
If they (have) a good tracking system, they would know where the coffin is.
If Locke (come) to the hospital, Jack will examine him.
If Jack's father (be) alive, Jack wouldn't be at the airport.
Locke (walk) again if his condition wasn't irreversible.
If they don't find the coffin, the family (not have) the service.
If I (lose) a suitcase full of knives, I would be very embarrassed!
If I were Jack, I (call) the airline every day.

Your turn: science or faith?À toi : la science ou la foi ?

1. Think about it (discuss with a partner, or in class):

  • Jack says: « They lost my father. » Locke answers: « They didn't lose your father, they just lost his body. » What is the difference between « your father » and « his body » for Locke?
  • Where do you think Jack's father is now? In the coffin? In heaven? In the memory of the people who loved him? Nowhere?
  • Jack looks for a tracking system, Locke smiles. Who is the man of science? Who is the man of faith?
  • Jack says: « Nothing is irreversible. » Do you agree with him?

Useful words: the body · the soul · the spirit · heaven · the afterlife · to believe in · faith · science · I think that… · I don't agree with… · For me…

2. Write (on a sheet of paper, 8 to 10 lines): « If I were Jack… » or « If I were Locke… »: what would you say, do and think at the lost luggage desk? Use at least four if-sentences.
