- Why are SME interviews often frustrating, according to the author? It is not a personal failing: SMEs are senior, busy, and too expert.
- What is « the curse of knowledge »? The consequences: they skip « obvious » steps and use jargon.
- What is the last of the four stages of expertise? That is where most SMEs are, and why they find it hard to explain.
- Why should you study the topic before the interview? « People who feel respected tell better stories. »
- What is « the single biggest lever » of the interviewer? Step 2.
- Which of these is an open-ended question? Open questions start with What, How, Why, Tell me about, Describe; closed ones with Do, Did, Was, Is, Are.
- What does the example of the trip show? « Did you have a good trip? » « Yes, thanks. » vs a mesa trail, a view and a rattlesnake.
- Why should you resist the urge to fill a pause? Step 3.
- Why does the author still take notes by hand? The AI tool does the transcript; the handwritten notes are a way to look away.
- What is « mirroring »? « 50 meters into the ground? »
- What does the example of the foundation show? « The foundation was tough to build » became 192 concrete piles, 50 meters deep.
- Why paraphrase what you heard? Rather than guessing at their meaning later at your desk.
- According to the conclusion, what makes a great interviewer? No charisma needed.
