The lesson: MODAL + HAVE TO / BE ABLE TOLa leçon : MODAL + HAVE TO / BE ABLE TO

🚫 Two modals never follow each other

He will can swim. → He will be able to swim.

She will must work. → She will have to work.

You should can drive. → You should be able to drive.

On remplace le 2e modal : can → be able to, must → have to.

⏩ The future of can and must

Il pourra nager. → He will be able to swim.

Il devra partir. → He will have to leave.

Je n'aurai pas à payer. → I won't have to pay.

can et must n'ont pas de futur : on passe par be able to et have to.

❓ Questions

Will you call me? · Should I stay? · Can I go?

Must I stay? = Do I have to stay?

Le modal passe devant le sujet, sans do (Do I can…?). Mais have to et need to prennent do.

➖ Negatives

I can't · I won't · you shouldn't · you mustn't

You don't have to · you needn't = pas obligé

Rappel : mustn't = interdit ; don't have to / needn't = pas nécessaire.
