Verb endings in -ed

waved, walked, visited… Three ways to say -ed: /d/, /t/ or /ɪd/!

1Listen and repeat

The -ed of regular verbs in the past has three pronunciations, and it only adds a syllable after the sounds /t/ and /d/: decided /dɪˈsaɪdɪd/, but danced /dɑːnst/ (one syllable!).

/d/

    /t/

      /ɪd/

        2/d/, /t/ or /ɪd/?

Listen to each word (▶) without seeing it, then drag it into the right box (or tap the word, then the box). When you're right, you can read it!

The rule: /ɪd/ after the sounds /t/ and /d/ (started, decided); /t/ after a voiceless sound like /p/ /k/ /f/ /s/ /ʃ/ /tʃ/ (whipped, danced, washed, watched); /d/ everywhere else (listened, married). Tip: try /d/ first!
