1Listen and repeat
To say th, put the tip of your tongue between your teeth and blow. There are two th sounds. Put your hand on your throat: with the voiced /ð/ (this, mother), it vibrates; with the voiceless /θ/ (think, bath), it doesn't. Don't say “z”, “s” or “d” instead!
Voiced th /ð/: your throat vibrates
Voiceless th /θ/: no vibration
Careful! No th in these words
2Voiced or voiceless?
Listen to each word (▶) without seeing it, then drag it into the right box (or tap the word, then the box). When you're right, you can read it!
The rule: Little everyday words (the, this, that, they, there, then, though) and words in -ther (brother, weather) have the voiced /ð/, and so does a final -the (breathe, clothes). Most other words, especially words from Greek (theatre, theory, method), and a final -th (mouth, month) have the voiceless /θ/.
