📋 Obligation: you have no choice

Il faut, on est obligé. must + base verbale (he musts, must to go). must n'existe qu'au présent : au passé, on dit had to (musted), au futur will have to.

🆓 No obligation: you are free

It's Sunday: I don't have to get up early.

He doesn't need to pay: it's free.

Ce n'est pas obligatoire, pas la peine. needn't + base verbale, sans to.

mustn't = tu ne dois pas y aller (c'est interdit).
don't have to = tu n'es pas obligé d'y aller (tu fais comme tu veux).
mustn't n'est donc PAS le contraire de must !
