Cooks prepare food in a kitchen. They work in restaurants, hotels, school canteens and hospitals.
Every morning, they check the food deliveries. They wash, peel and cut the vegetables. They prepare the meat and the fish. They make sauces, soups and desserts.
At lunchtime and in the evening, there are a lot of customers. Cooks work very fast. They cook the dishes and they put the food on the plates. The plates must be beautiful!
Cooks work in a team: the chef gives the orders and the cooks follow the recipes. A young cook is called a "commis".
Cooks wear a white jacket, an apron and a hat. They wear safety shoes because the floor is often wet. They use knives, pans, ovens and mixers.
Cooks stand all day. The kitchen is hot and noisy. Cooks have to be fast, clean and organised.
