Words in -ism

racism, feminism, optimism… Learn to say /ɪzəm/ the English way!

1Listen and repeat

In English, -ism is two syllables: /ɪ.zəm/, like “iz-um”. The s sounds like a z, and there is a little /ə/ before the m. Don't say “isme” like in French!

    2Find the stressed syllable

Listen to each word and click the syllable that is louder and longer.

The rule: -ism is never stressed. The stress stays where it is in the “base” word: FEMinine → FEMinism, SYMbol → SYMbolism, iDEAL → iDEalism. That's why idealism is the odd one out!
