Hi, welcome to, I'm your host Christine. Today, we'll be taking a brief look at the most prominent landmark in Washington DC, the Washington Monument.
The Washington Monument is the most prominent as well as the oldest attractions in Washington DC. It was built in honor of George Washington who led the country to Independence and then became its first president. The monument is shaped like an Egyptian obelisk, five hundred and fifty-five feet high and averages thirty to forty miles visibility in clear weather.
The monument is among the tallest masonry structures, it was designed by Robert Mills, a prominent American architect of the 1840s. The actual construction of the monument began in 1848, but was not completed until eighteen eighty-four, almost thirty years after the architect's death.
At the time of its construction, it was the tallest building in the world. It is still the tallest building in Washington DC.
